Transformational Threads celebrates its first anniversary with the licensing of the image of Maryland painter Judith Olivia HeartSong's "Peacock (Crimson)". "Peacock" in thread is available in a limited edition of 25.

This extraordinary custom needlework, which beautifully captures the bold red coloring and fine detail of the original acrylic, is sized 20 inches x 20 inches. As hand-stretched and matted, the finished, ready-to-frame piece is approximately 24 inches x 24 inches. Each hand-made piece, consisting of hundreds and hundreds of hand-dyed threads covering the entire ground, retails for $365.00, plus 5% Virginia sales tax, $18.25; total $383.25); handling and shipping charges, including postal insurance, are extra.

Orders require full payment, including handling, shipping, and insurance charges, in advance.

Personal or certified checks are accepted. Shipment or pick-up or delivery occurs after checks "clear" the bank. Cash payments also are accepted for purchases that are made in person. Transformational Threads regrets that it is unable to accept credit cards at this time.

Custom editions in sizes 16x16 inches and 12x12 inches will be considered, if interest warrants, with each edition limited to 25 pieces. ("Peacock" in thread is limited to a maximum of 100 pieces, in whatever combination of sizes exists.) Needlework sized 16x16 will be priced at $220.00, plus 5% Virginia sales tax ($11.00); that sized 12x12 will be priced at $175.00, plus 5% Virginia sales tax ($8.75), with handling and shipping charges assessed as necessary. A reserve deposit of 50% will be required. PLEASE NOTE: Transformational Threads will arrange for the smaller sized editions to be created once it has at least 15 customer orders on file. Fulfillment of an edition order requires at least 8 weeks.

Inaugural Editions

The first editions of hand-made thread paintings inspired by Jennifer Kassing-Bradley's "Waikiki Gold" and Nuch Owen's "Koi" were issued in February 2008. These are available for purchase, as is the embroidery painting of Jennifer's "Nerium Oleander #1," issued in June 2008. Orders may be placed for needlework based on Jennifer's "Brassauola nodosa" and "Dendrobium Nobile #4".

All embroidery art is custom-produced exclusively for Transformational Threads.

Each of the first editions comprises 25 pieces, stretched and matted to facilitate framing and wrapped for protection. Overall dimensions of each piece are approximately 16 inches by 20 inches, with the image itself measuring approximately 12 inches by 15 inches. The entire ground is hand-embroidered on white cotton (a notable feature of Vietnamese embroidery). Vibrant colors from hand-dyed threads and exceptionally fine shadings characterize the delicate yet built-up stitches. Because each piece in every edition is hand-made, some slight variations occur from piece to piece.

The first-edition purchase price of "Waikiki Gold," "Koi," and "Nerium Oleander #1" is $175 per thread painting, plus Virginia state sales tax of 5% ($8.75) and, as applicable, shipping and handling charges, which will include postal insurance. Full payment is required at time of purchase. Shipping is via UPS, unless other arrangements are agreed to and made in advance. Transformational Threads will deliver locally to purchasers in Arlington County and Alexandria, Va.

Prices are subject to change as editions sell out.

Personal or certified checks are accepted; shipment will occur after checks "clear" the bank. Cash payments also are accepted for purchases that are made in person. Transformational Threads regrets that it is unable to accept credit cards at this time.

Realizing an Image in Embroidery

PLEASE NOTE: Every embroidery painting is hand-made in Vietnam, exclusively for Transformational Threads, by highly skilled artisans who work from either a color photograph (most often) or a computerized image of the original artwork. The custom process begins with creation of a sample of the licensed image, a task requiring from two months to four months of painstaking work, depending on the complexity of the image, the image size, the number of different threads required to faithfully and artistically render the image in the necessary colors, and the fabric used (cotton). The embroiderer studies the image carefully to understand the structure of the image and its inspiration, the better to conceive, intuitively, the arrangement of what will be a highly textured re-creation in thread on cloth. On receipt by Transformational Threads, samples are sent to artists for approval. Once samples are approved, edition orders are placed, with final product arriving approximately six weeks to eight weeks later. Stretching and matting (using archival mats) are handled professionally and included in the price of each piece.

Because work is by hand, labor- and therefore time-intensive, and done abroad, delays sometimes are unavoidable. Please check this page for updates on availability.

Artwork licensed by the artists to Transformational Threads is limited to four editions of 25 pieces, or a maximum of 100 thread paintings. Maximum edition sizes for any particular licensed image may vary but will never exceed 100, to ensure the quality of the hand-work and the artistic integrity and uniqueness of the embroidery and to protect the integrity of the licensed artist's original work.
