Transformational Threads licenses images of original fine art for re-creation in custom hand-embroidery by highly skilled Vietnamese artisans. The company is unique in its approach to licensing, offering limited-edition works of fiber art that are inspired by paintings or other artwork and made available for purchase at especially affordable prices.
In exchange for the right to use licensed images, Transformational Threads pays artists with whom it contracts a negotiated percentage of net sales. In addition to promoting the work of emerging and mid-career American artists through licensing, the company supports the livelihood of artisans in Vietnam by contracting for their finely honed skills, which are applied to an exquisite and centuries-old hand-craft.
Based in Arlington, Virginia, Transformational Threads is a sole proprietorship, owned and operated by Maureen E. Doallas, who founded the company in 2008.
Realizing an Image in Embroidery
Every edition of a thread painting is custom-created exclusively for Transformational Threads. Every piece is hand-made by a highly skilled Vietnamese artisan who works from either a color photograph or a digital image of the original artwork.
The custom process, which is labor- and time-intensive, begins with creation of a sample of the licensed image, a task requiring from two months to four months of painstaking work, depending on the complexity of the image, the image size, the number of different hand-dyed threads required to faithfully and artistically render the image in the necessary colors, and the fabric used (generally, white cotton). The embroiderer studies the image carefully to understand the structure of the image and its inspiration, the better to conceive, intuitively, the arrangement of what will be a highly textured re-creation in thread on cloth.
On receipt by Transformational Threads, the sample is sent to the artist for approval. Once a sample is approved, an edition order is placed, with the final product arriving from Vietnam approximately six weeks to eight weeks later. Hand-stretching and matting (using archival mats) are handled by a professional and are included in the price of each piece.
Each edition comprises 25 pieces. Transformational Threads deliberately limits edition size to ensure the quality of the hand-work and the artistic integrity and uniqueness of the hand-embroidery, and to protect the integrity of the licensing artist's original work.
This exquisite embroidery art will not disappoint! It is unique, affordable, and perfect for home or office decorating, fundraising, or special-occasion gift-giving, including weddings and anniversaries, birthdays, Mother's Day, and Christmas, as well as performance, retirement, and other recognition events.
